Trend Thursdays: Light Up the Sky

Traditionally these sky lanterns have been used in Taipei and Thailand as part of special occasions and festivals. They light up the sky beautifully and are so dramatic when you release them in large groups. The sky lanterns would be a great addition to a wedding, birthday or even funeral. You can attach wishes or messages to them and send them to the "heavens" to be fulfilled.

From Wikipedia, "Sky lanterns are traditionally made of oiled rice paper with a bamboo frame that contain a small candle or fuel cell, which is a waxy combustible material. When lit the fuel cell heats the air, creating smoke, and causes the lantern to rise into the air. The sky lantern is airborne for approximately 15 minutes, or until the fuel cell is exhausted, then the sky lantern floats back to the ground. They will achieve quite a height, but it is recommended not to launch them in strong winds."

Now you have the opportunity to use these unique lanterns for your next event. You can order sky lanterns from a company like The Sky Lantern. It comes in various colors, but I think the white is the most beautiful visually. I have used them at some weddings and it really wows the guests. Trend Thursdays: What's Hot in Bridal Gowns

Every bridal season we are wowed by the designs that are created by fabulous designers. There's always a handful of trends that is a must have for that year. In the past we have seen colored ribbon sashes, Swarovski crystal embellishments, the mermaid dress phenomenon, and even colored wedding gowns. So what's the must have look this year?

Here's my trend alert for the remainder of the 2009 bridal season, which will carry over to the early part of 2010.

Trend Thursday: The Multi-Day Soiree

Multi-Day Soirees are the hottest and latest trends in bridal extravaganza. No longer is a one-day event sufficient. The more parties' one has the better...because having just a ceremony and reception is so passe. Sure, in some cultures, multi-day events have been a standard, but more over we are seeing that aspect being hybridized into something totally new.

Couples are treating local weddings as if they are on a destination wedding and really making it a week of pure enjoyment, ending it with one spectacular "I DO!" Here's a sample itinerary of a multi-day wedding that I just completed for a local couple:

Tuesday - Cocktail Party for Bridal Party and Immediate Family.

Wednesday - Welcome Crab and Clam Bake for all guests.

Thursday - Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties at different locals.

Friday: Rehearsal and Rehearsal Dinner for Bridal Party, Immediate Family and Out-of-Town Guests.

Saturday: Ceremony and Reception

Sunday: After Wedding Brunch for all guests.

Seriously, there were at least 100 people at each event and the party pulse just carried over to the ceremony and reception making it one of the best weddings I have ever been too. Everyone was so at ease with each other because they got to know each other throughout the week. It was a great and grand celebration.

Not every couple can afford to do a week-long event at this caliper, but one can incorporate this idea and make it more intimate, with just a handful of people. The great thing about doing something like this is that it takes your mind off things and gives you the opportunity to relax and enjoy the people you love. It's the thought that the busier you are, the less you are to worry about things.

Regardless if you celebrate all week long or just for one day, the one thing that you have to remember is that this is a celebration...CELEBRATE, Have Fun, and Enjoy EVERYTHING that is unfolding before your eyes. Don't sweat the small stuff...it's really not worth it.

Here's to celebrations that last for multiple days and to a trend that surely will just continue to grow.

Trend Thursdays: The Look at The Met Costume Institute Gala

It's always fun to see what celebs wore to The Met's Costume Institute Gala. This year's gala was held on Monday, May 4, 2009. It's the time of the year that I hold with bathed breathe on what made it down The Met's red carpet. I realize that it is sort of a costume party, but isn't it also a way to show off your best "costumes" or "couture?" Maybe even start the next trend or look?

This year's theme was "Model as Muse" and we all know that at one time or another, designers have had their muse for creating their lines. Here are some of the more famous pairings:

• Bob Mackie and Cher
• Halston and Jerry Hall
• Anna Sui and Naomi Campbell
• Louis Vuitton and Madonna
• Marc Jacobs and Anne Hathaway
• Chanel and Nicole Kidman

Well the outfits and costumes did not disappoint, some made us gasp in awe and others just made us gag in disgust. I will present my top 4 in the red hot and the hot mess categories.

First the Hot Mess of The Met's Costume Institute Gala

All four of these fashion icons, just made odd choices...was this truly their intention to look somewhat odd, crazy, dowdy, and dated?

Rihanna in Dolce & Gabbana; Madonna in Louis Vuitton; Kirsten Dunst in Chanel; and Kerry Washington in Louis Vuitton.

Would you recommend any of these looks to your bridesmaids? How about wearing it to a cocktail party? I hope not, especially Madonna's rabbit ear headpiece.

Now for the Red Hots at The Met's Costume Institute Gala

These four style icons hit the mark. Not only were their outfits fresh, but they didn't look out of place either. I mean really...Ashley's Olsen's dress could have come off very Golden Girls caftan, Renee's color choice could have come off as pea soup, Kate Moss' gold lame dress with matching turban could have come off dated, and Anne's zippered dress meats Brigitte Bardot do could have been a big flop, but all four just sizzled. Now these outfits are trends I could live with.

Trend Thursday: Smaller is Sometimes Better

Lately, I have been talking to more couples who are looking to make their wedding and reception more intimate. When I say intimate, I am talking 50 people or less. I am not sure if this is because they have heard from past couples that they wish they had a smaller wedding or if it's part of being more economically aware.

I personally think this trend may be induced by the recession. I think couples are looking at ways to be less extravagant in light of what's happening financially around the globe. Even though they are being conscious, I think they are also looking at providing a better quality event in whole.

Couples are looking at ways to do things better without being over the top with the budget that they have. This includes upgrading the food, picking estates with an intimate space, or upgrading the total guest experience.

At a recent wedding that I planned, the couple only invited 30 of their closest family and friends. They opted to rent out an estate where everyone can stay under one roof for the duration of the 3-day event. They were able to visit with each of their loved ones, share special memories, and really enjoy each other's company. On wedding day, the guests were invited into a transformed ceremony and reception site within the estate. They enjoyed wonderful musicians during the ceremony and reception, feasted on a 7-course meal fit for a king and queen, and enjoyed an evening under the stars. It was truly a memorable event for all. Even though they had an intimate event, they still wanted top notch quality and this was definitely better than quantity.

Therefore, if you are looking for ways to maximize your dollars, you might want to look at cutting down your guest list. Pouring more of your budget into making a fabulous small and intimate celebration is a great way to get what you really want. Quantity does not make a party...attitude does. You can always have a more informal BBQ celebration for all your other friends later on.

So here's a trend for you to contemplate, smaller is sometimes better.

Trend Thursday: Unplugging

Today is Thursday and it's usually the day that I share with you some fantastic trends happening in the wedding, event, or fashion industry, but instead I am going to tell you a new trend..."Unplugging."

Unplugging, as defined by me, is to literally take yourself off any social media outlets for a few days. This is exactly what I will be doing for three days while I get some much needed vacation with my family. I wonder if I will be able to do it!

At any rate, starting at noon on 4/23/09 PT, I will be going device/computer free. I will not be blogging, Tweeting, Facebookin', emailing, or anything else (though I will be taking cell calls...I put my sim card in my old school flip phone...no blackberry) until Monday 4/27/09, just in time for another week of blogging and inspiring. If I would have planned it out better, I would have written several blogs early and had them scheduled to be posted on the appropriate dates, but I tend to write my blogs on the fly.

Trend Thursday: My Favorite Dresses for Spring 2010

What wedding planner does not love wedding gowns? With a slew of designers showing off their Spring 2010 collection recently, I was salivating at the gorgeous creations that hit the runways. Sure there were some of the same ole same ole Princess gowns, Grecian gowns, empire, mermaid and a-lines, but folks those are the standards that people want and are staples to any bridal collection.

I was in bridal gown overload looking at all these gowns but than there were some that just stood out to me. Here are my top four picks for Spring 2010.

1. Carolina Herrera - This gown was just embellished enough and gave the whole look that extra "Ola senorita" feel about it. It was young, vibrant and the fabric looks incredible. The neckline is not too revealing and the ruching is just perfect. I particularly love the boating hat also. Work of art considering she based her inspiration on works of art this season.
   
2. Monique Lhuillier - I am a fan of Monique! This dress is so beautiful. The bodice is perfectly ruched and the ball skirt just reminds me of a bed of flowers. Perfect for a spring wedding. What I love about this dress is that it looks like its structured or has to many fabrics but it actually moves nicely, an almost ethereal feel to the whole dress.
3. Oscar de la Renta - Oscar is the master of classic silhouettes that still is modern. What I love about this dress is that it is such a throw back to Jackie O, but I could see a modern day first bride wearing it too. I love the ribbon belt, the embellished fabric, the 3/4 sleeves and the whole look of this piece. Perfect for a wedding at the courthouse or even in a lovely meadow somewhere. Pure bridal without being over the top.
4. Priscilla of Boston - This dress is perfect, from the silver-ish undertone to to the belted empire waist, to the detachable train. Elegant, regal and outstanding. It's so Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly meets Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. I love it.

Trend Thursdays: Headbanging Head Bands

We are all tired of seeing the tiara's at weddings, especially the ginormous ones the looks like the bride just won a drag pageant. And I understand that everyone wants to be a princess and you still can only a little more fresh and not so ordinary. For the latest head pieces, look to blinged out headbands. More and more bridal designers are opting for these great hair wear because it brings a little understated and demure look to the whole ensemble.

There are so many styles to choose from too. Swarovski crystal encrusted, satin ribbon tied pieces, pearl encrusted, you name it, I am sure there's a headband out there with it.

If don't have the latest InStyle Wedding Magazine, I suggest you get it, they have some great headband options in it from an assortment of designers and providers. So if you are rethinking your bridal hair accessory, maybe this is just the little UMPH you may need!

Yesterday on both my Facebook and Twitter status, I asked my friends and followers this one question: " I am wondering - for you married folks, what do you remember most of your wedding? For those getting married - what are you looking forward to the most?

I asked this questions so that I can post it on my blog. I think it is a great way for future brides and grooms to see what experiences, details, that the past brides and grooms remembered most. Trend Thursdays: Chapeaux D'Art

Karl Lagerfeld has done it again...with these fabulous head pieces that are fit for a queen! Now that Aretha (Franklin) has opened the Pandora's Box of over-the-top Chapeaux, it's a free-for-all in the headdress department. These "art hats" are from Chanel's pre-fall 2009 collection and they are absolutely beautiful! Not that all brides or gamines will be able to pull it off or even consider it, but those more daring can definitely make a statement.



These headpieces should not to be paired with elaborate dresses, but more simple and understated ones, making the crowing effect the wow factor to your ensemble. Indie, fashionista, off-beat, and bold brides this is something to consider this season, ditch the veil and go for the sculpted head piece.

Trend Thursday: Let Them Eat Croquembouche!

This is a re-post from a blog that I did in May 2008. I have been getting a lot of questions about cake alternatives and this post is one of my favorite alternatives to the wedding cake. So please enjoy the re-post of Let Them Eat Croquembouche!

A French staple at weddings and other celebrations, the Croquembouche of Profiteroles is finally making it to the States...and you don't have to be French to enjoy it. This luscious tower of cream puffs (choux filled with pastry cream) drizzled with caramelized sugar is not only great to look at but also a sweet treat.

Croque en bouche means "crunch in the mouth" but these bite size delicacies are more than that. The crunch comes from the caramelized sugar. The cake usually made in a high cone form is usually decorated with caramel, sugar almonds, chocolate, flowers or ribbons.

So forget about the tired old chocolate fountains that become a glob of a mess and the dessert bar that becomes way too much. Throw your party back to the era of Marie Antoinette and let them eat a "ball" of heaven. The choux can be filled with any savory filling, but I personally think the vanilla cream is the best.

This cake can substitute for a grooms cake or even replace the wedding cake all together...perfect for the bride that hates cake. Croquembouche's can usually be made by your local French Pastry Bakery, if not you may want to do a Google search on bakeries in your area that specialize in these masterpieces. Locally, Christine Dahl in Santa Barbara specializes in these cakes as well as in traditional wedding cakes. This is a unique take on a US wedding cake but the croquembouche is definitely a classic worldwide.

Trend Thursday: Celebrity Chefs

Forget the celebrity singer, celebrity planner, and even the celebrity designer! Couples are clamoring for the Celebrity Chef! With the popularity of shows like Top Chef, Iron Chef, and the myriad of other cooking shows, on such networks as Food Network, brides and grooms are looking to have these icons of taste cater their wedding.

One hit show, Top Chef, has been enticing brides and grooms to call on these rising stars. Most likely because to most people, these individuals are more accessible than say Cat Cora, Mario Bartali, Jamie Oliver, and Wolfgang Puck. However, if you have the dough...even you can get the best of the best to cook for your guests.

So if your budget is more shiitake mushroom then white truffle, you might want to consider such reality show chefs as Fabio Viviani from the current season of Top Chef or Lisa Garza from The Next Food Network Star, before they soar to super nova chef status. Individuals like this are known because of their TV appearance and loved because of their personality...plus their food looks so yummy on the boob-tube. Additionally, their pricing is probably more competitive than say Chef Tom Colicchio when it comes to catering your wedding feast.

The great thing about this trend is couples are FINALLY putting focus on the foods that they are serving to their guests. Like my guest blogger Paul Bott stated last week, this trend of foodies and treating a wedding dinner as a wedding feast is really rising in popularity. But the trend of hiring the celebrity chef is the newest "wow" factor that people are doing, because now everyone at the celebration can taste a piece of this superstar!

Have fun thinking of who should cook your feast. Remember, it never hurts to inquire about their services...you might just be surprised what they comeback with. Now I'm hungry!

Trend Thursday: Something Blue

Last year, I had told one of my brides that turquoise jewelry will be the next big thing and that she should look into getting a piece to wear on her wedding day. She looked at me as if I had three eyes. Well...now that Eva Mendes has busted out the bold Turquoise and Diamond necklace by Van Cleef & Arpels with that white Dior dress at the 2009 Golden Globes, you can bet brides will be clamoring for this look and adding that turquoise stone as their something blue for their special day.

What I love and have always loved about Turquoise jewelry is the natural look it has and the instant "BAM" it gives when you are wearing it. Sure, people often think of Turquoise as being too "native" or too "western" but in reality, a lot of jewelers are making this rock look modern, as did Van Cleef & Arpels mixing it up with Diamonds.
