30 Days and Counting

I love Morgan Spurlock's show 30 Days, which can be seen on the FX on Tuesday evenings at 10pm. This is the 3rd season of the show. This thought provoking show has explored everything from being in jail, to working in a coalmine, to living with same-sex parents. However, what they all explore is the transformation one goes through once you have lived in their shoes for 30 Days.

It's about learning to understand the lives of people who are different from you and try to understand what their lives are like and how they live it day-to-day. This 3rd season has been very good, and for the first time in watching the show, I actually felt sad - not hopeful. This was the same-sex parenting show, where they got a woman to live with a gay family for 30-days. Maybe the issue is too close to my heart, but I felt that the person coming in the lives of the same-sex couple was guarded the entire time she was on the show and never opened up to the possibility that this couple, The Patrick's, were good parents, good people and equals to their heterosexual counterparts. Instead, she kept bringing up her own moral values and never opening up to the moral values of this couple.

The thing that really made me upset is how she kept saying that the people she was meeting was attacking her for her beliefs, but never stopped for one moment to say, "hey, maybe I am also attacking their beliefs" which she did quite frequently. What even irked me even more was one scene where she met two women working to protect gay families. One of the women, a lesbian, was explaining her story about being with her partner, having a kid through artificial insemination, and than breaking up. She stated that she could no longer see her kid because she was not the biological parent and felt as though her kid was being abandoned by her. Well this Kati woman looked her in the eye and said, "As a lesbian, why would you want to bring a kid into this world anyway?" Well she did not stop to think that "straight" people bring kids into this world all the time, give them up for adoption, abandon them because they got pregnant at an early age, or neglect them all together. Look at the number of kids in the foster care system.

At any rate, I felt that this episode was just so disheartening, maybe that is what Morgan wanted, because as a gay man...there is no way I can change the ideals people hold and I don't expect to. Nevertheless, I see how gays and lesbians are still thought of as not being equals to our straight counterparts, because of stereotypes that conservative religious organizations have placed on this group of people.

I still love the show and hope that all of you will watch it, because as hard as it was for me to watch this particular episode...the premise of the show is to hold people to their own truths, in hopes that those open enough to accept the lives of others and respect their lives without any judgment can learn from them. What I hope people get with this show is that no matter what you might think of people who are different from you...is to maybe open up a bit and be compassionate to them for living the best lives they know possible.

This blog really does not relate to any events, but I guess if I had to tie it in...OPEN YOUR MINDS TO ALL THE POSSIBILITIES. You may amaze yourself of what you can see when you do.

Adjust Your Height Accordingly

I was watching my morning news, Good Morning America, getting ready for my morning routines when they mentioned shoes with adjustable heels. I automatically perked up and listed attentively to what they were about to present.

What I saw were stilettos that went from 3.25 inch to 1.5 inch heels with just a twist of the heel. What a concept and how perfect is this for the bride! CAMiLEON HEELS has created technology that makes your stilettos go from day to night.

According to their website the transformation happens in three steps:

"Adjusting CAMiLEON Heels from high-to-low heel positions is accomplished in three easy steps:

Step 1: Secure one hand around the top of the heel, while the other hand pulls straight down on the lower half of the heel to disengage it from its upright locked position.

Step 2: Push forward on the lower portion of the heel until it stops moving and is stowed directly under the arch region of the shoe.

Step 3: Push straight backward on the tip of the stowed heel until it is recessed slightly into the upper heel cavity and secured in its locked position.

Done! Once the adjustment has been made from a high-to-low heel position, the upper edge of the stowed heel should no longer be visible.

To restore the heel back into its full high heel position, simply reverse the previous steps."

These shoes are GENIUS! Currently CAMiLEON HEELS offers 16 different styles that range from pumps to mules and ranges in price from $210 - $325. They also offer free shipping and free returns (don't know why you would want to). All their styles are made with soft Italian Napa Leather. According to the news resources, these shoes are also very comfortable.

Ladies, don't hesitate to buy these shoes to your collection, just think you get two styles in one. Move over Manolo, Hello CAMiLEON.

Misinformation = Ignorance

This is not an event blog...it's another one of my political blogs, and I really felt the need to post what I was feeling on my blog site. Freedom of speech...right!

I was surfing the web tonight to see what's going on with the whole "gay marriage" thing that had people up in arms prior to June 17th. Conservatives and groups like National Organization for Marriage thought that it would breakdown the American Family, more so than it already was. Well we all know by now that the sky has not fallen and that the world and the US is still in the same state as it was prior to gay couples saying I Do last week. Gas prices are still high, people are still getting foreclosed on, unemployment rate is up, and people are still trying to make ends meet. Shouldn't concentration be placed on how we can fix the US economy...before we worry about what same-sex marriage will do (which is nothing) to the Nation?

I was reading an article on the web and the organization National Organization for Marriage was mentioned in it. They are one of the sponsors who collected signatures to put a ban on same-sex marriages on the California Ballot for November, which if passed will officially put a discriminatory clause into the California Constitution, officially putting certain groups of people, because of their sexual orientation, as not second class citizens and not worthy of equality. As I was scanning their site I went to a tab called "Get Informed" and then to a menu item called "Threat to Marriage." On this Web page they had talking points that people can print out and pass out as well a video of kids talking about mothers and fathers and talking about things like "Grandma, if Grandpa was a woman you can still marry him" with a voice over that says, "If you change the definition of marriage, our kids will be taught a new way of thinking." Well maybe we do need to teach our kids a new way of thinking and teaching them that families come in many different forms, not just nuclear family of the 1950s.

This whole thing just got me fired up and saddened me that some people think that the American Family is and should be only one way, and if it's not - then your family is doomed! I think it's irresponsible and ignorant to think that Americans should only have one model for a family unit, isn't America dubbed as the world's melting pot, thanks to our DIVERSE citizens and their cultural backgrounds. So I read their hand out, which comes in an English and Spanish version. All three versions start with specifics for Catholics, Protestants and the Jewish Faith, but all three have the following as the same, which they call the 7 scientific reasons (funny they use the word scientific, because most Christians do not even believe in the scientific notion of evolution...so why should they believe this?) by the way I have put my comments in red to each of their "7 Scientific Reasons":
  1. Marriage reduces the risk of poverty for children and communities. The majority of children whose parents don’t get or stay married, experience at least a year of poverty.
According to the US Census Bureau, currently there are 32.2 million people living in poverty...are you saying that most of these 32.2 million people in poverty in the US is from single parents or gay parents...you must be delusional. Please my parents have been married for 41 years and I know there was a time we lived in poverty where my parents scraped to make ends meet. I think most families regardless of marital status have experienced a level of poverty in the US. Additionally, I am sure that a many of the people you are trying to reach is also living below the poverty line and most likely married.
  2. Fatherless households increase crime. Boys whose parents divorced or never married, for example, are two to three times more likely to end up in jail as adults.
What kind of statement is this? I know many kids, boys included, who are products of divorced parents or came from single parent households and the majority of them are doing well and all have never been in jail. I know of kids and boys who come from parents who are married who have ended up in jail and have criminal backgrounds. Just recently a boy in Oxnard, CA who came from a non-divorce household - shot a kid in the head for being gay. So who should we be more worried about? Does it really matter if there is a mother and father, a single mother, a single father, a mother and mother or father and father, as long as the kids get unconditional love, guidance and support? Aren't our goals as parents to teach our kids right from wrong and to give them the best guidance we can so that they can make the right decisions as adults?
  3. Marriage protects children’s physical and mental health. Children whose parents get and stay married are healthier and also much less likely to suffer mental illness, including depression and teen suicide.
This is another idiotic comment, where do they get these "scientific reasons." I've met kids who have been born to married parents with physical problems or who have developed mental health issues because of the pressures from other kids. Additionally, I know kids who have suffered from anorexia and bulimia because their mothers constantly tell them they are too fat or not as pretty as their friends, and this is from straight married couples. Additionally, there are a lot of gay kids out there who are living with depression or who have committed suicide, because they don't think society will accept them or have parents who are supportive of them. Children whose parents get married and stay married are no healthier than those living with single parents or gay parents. I personally think kids from single parents and gay parents do better because they are more open minded to the greater society.
  4. Both men and women who marry live longer, healthier and happier lives. On virtually every measure of health and well-being, married people are better-off than otherwise similar singles, on average.
So how do you explain Del Martin and Phyllis Lyons, a lesbian couple who are both in their 80s and who have been together for 50 years. They sure lived a full long and healthy life and mostly happy, except for the discrimination they have lived through from people who discriminated against them. I know many straight married couples who live together because of convenience, not because of love, does not mean they are healthier or happier than my partner and I. I know many straight people who were married and who have died younger than some of their gay friends. I also know singles that are happily single including one who has never been married and is currently 90 years old. So this statement is a little misleading.
  5. Just living together is not the same as marriage. Married couples who cohabit first are thirty to fifty percent more likely to divorce. People who just live together do not get the same boost to health, welfare and happiness, on average, as spouses. Neither do their children. Children whose parents cohabit are at increased risk for domestic violence and child abuse and neglect. Children born to parents who were just living together are also three times more likely to experience their parents’ breakup by age 5.
This is a crazy statement. How many of your readers lived together before they were married? I know people who never lived together before they got married, who are divorced now. Boost in welfare...how many married couples are suffering and losing their homes because their income can no longer sustain their living? If marriage boosts welfare why are there so many Americans just trying to make it to their next paycheck to survive, pawning their wedding rings to buy gas, and going bankrupt? Boost in happiness - how many Americans are currently taking anti-depressant pills that are in a marriage? Boost in health...isn't America the most obese nation in the world? Children in increased risk for domestic violence, child abuse and neglect - how many kids have died because their married mothers or fathers were so consumed with their own needs that they have left kids in their cars, or did not notice that the kid fell into the family pool - isn't that neglect? How many kids are in the foster care system because of abuse, domestic violence and neglect from married households? Neglect, domestic violence and abuse come from the parents not focusing on their kids and only focused on their needs and wants. I know a lot more single parents and gay parents who do everything for their kids and let their own needs and wants subside just to provide for their children.
  6. Parents who don’t get or stay married put children’s education at risk. Children whose parents divorced or never married have lower grade point averages, are more likely to be held back a grade, and to drop out of school. They are also less likely to end up college graduates.
I know many kids from single parents and gay parents who have extremely high grade point averages and have graduated from some of the most prestigious colleges in the US. There are more kids that I run across, from married parents, who let their education subside so they can focus on starting their own family. How about the number of teens who become pregnant and become single mothers or fathers who come from married parents? What you should say is that kids from conservative, fundamentalist, close minded, married couples tend to be the bullies in school who ridicule those kids who are different from them.
  7. When marriages fail, ties between parents and children typically weaken too. Adult children whose parents divorced are only half as likely to have warm, close ties to both their mothers and their fathers. For example, in one large national survey, 65 percent of adult children of divorce reported they were not close to their fathers (compared to 29 percent of adults from intact marriages).
Well isn't that why people divorce in the first place because the relationship between the couples has weakened? I think why kids of divorce have weakened relationships with their dads or moms is because there are a lot of deadbeat parents who don't do anything to support their kids - how many single moms or dads out there have not received child support from their former spouses? I'm sure this weakens the ties with the kids, because the kids see that their parents could care less about them, emotionally, physically and financially.

Anyway, now that I have a headache from being sick (must be because of my married parents) and all this misinformation on the part of National Organization for Marriage I encourage all Californians to VOTE NO to this ballot measure in November. Don't put discrimination in the California Constitution. Gay marriage is not going to change the way you live, the only thing it changes is that it gives TWO CONSENTING ADULTS in love the opportunity to marry each other - for better or for worst. If what National Organization for Marriage says is true, that people who are married have better health and well-being, and that married people are better-off than otherwise similar singles, why shouldn't gays and lesbians have the opportunity to tap into those benefits as well? Why should happiness, well-being and good health only be limited to the straight community?

Raising kids is not about having a mother and father, it's about having PARENTS who give them unconditional love, support, and encouragement. It's about raising kids to be the best they can be, to open them up to the possibilities of the world and to teach them the acceptance of all human beings. Just because a kid has a mother and a father does not make them any happier, healthier, smarter, or better than those kids raised in single parent households, or who have gay parents. So these reasons for people to vote for the ban of gay marriage are just ignorant.

Ultimately isn't it all about love and the notion of Life, Love and the Pursuit of Happiness? Whatever happened to the thought that all humans were created equal? I believe that all humans have the right to happiness and that any person has the right to marry the ONE CONSENTING ADULT that they love. So let equality ring and stay informed.

I'm Ready For My Close Up

Great photographs are essential to completing any type of event. I love when photographers such as Gloria Plunkett Photography captures the personalities of clients without even trying. I have to give her props on this blog, because she is just so outstanding to work with. She shot Cesar and John's wedding this past Saturday (6/21/08), and by Sunday morning, she already had a selection of photos on her blog for the client to preview. That's what I call great service, because it gave the clients something to look at right after their event.

I was with Cesar and John on Sunday, eating breakfast and opening gifts, when my assistant Sarah called to tell me some of their photos where already online...so we all got on the computer and proceeded to Gloria's blog site. When they saw the first photo both just gushed and got teary eyed. They said, "It's so nice to see what their guests saw" and "Gloria really captured our essence."

At any rate, I have used Gloria Plunkett Photography for many of my wedding clients and why is it I keep going back to her besides her wonderful photos and that we love working with each other? It's because she is just a joy to be around and client's say she is like family. She gets to know the clients and knows how to capture those special moments that the client does not even expect.

So if you are looking for a great photographer in the Southern California, don't hesitate to contact Gloria Plunkett Photography!

Reflections of You and Me

One of my favorite items for events are these mirrored candle holders made by Present Time. It adds a new level of dimension to a room and the table setting. I am actually using the 3 arm candle holder and the single candle holder at a wedding today.

What I love about these is that is that they are so versatile. They can be used in casual as well as upscale settings and the cost is minimal. They add depth to a room and helps reflect light as well, a much better solution than those "tired" and "old" mirrored squares or circles that people put floral arrangements or candles on.

The only thing you have to check on is to see if your venue site allows open flames. The candle holders are easy to assemble and they are so sturdy. The three arm measures 42 cm high and 33.5 cm deep. These candle holders come in black mirror also, but I think the classic mirrored look is just perfect.

So for your next event, add some reflection to your centerpieces by adding and mixing things up with these mirrored candle holders.

First Dance...Not the Last.

The first dance seems to be a right of passage for married couples. In modern times, it has reincarnated itself as a way to highlight the couple, some adding their own personality to the traditional dance, by foregoing the slow dance and adding some surprise hip-hop or ballroom moves to this sentimental moment.

Wikipedia states, "Traditionally, the first dance is the Waltz." Well we all know that most couples are not waltzing, since ballroom dancing is no longer a widespread skill, but is making a comeback thanks to Dancing with the Stars. Couples often go to dance studios or hire choreographers to help them with their first dance, and others just have a gift to bust-a-move.

The one question I often get is how to you pick just the right song for it. Well my answer to my clients is to pick a song that signifies you and your love one, or a song that reminds you of each other. It does not necessarily have to be a slow song...if Baby Got's Back has special meaning for you, then go ahead with your bad self and breakout your best MC Hammer moves. There are no limits to your choice of music or genre of dance. Feeling a little bold maybe, you can do a pas de deux from Swan Lake or even a vogue dual to Madonna's 4 minutes (may explain timing in the bedroom and that could be a bad thing).

At any rate, here are my top 10 favorite songs at the moment for the first dance - and yes, they are all slow songs, because I'm a sap!
  1. (tie) You and I Both and I'm Yours - Jason Mraz
  2. One in a Million You - Larry Graham
  3. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Leona Lewis
  4. No One - Alicia Keys
  5. Fields of Gold - Eva Cassidy
  6. My Funny Valentine - Melinda Doolittle
  7. At Last - Etta James
  8. La Vie En Rose - Edith Piaf
  9. How Deep is Your Love - The Bird and The Bee
  10. The Way You Look Tonight - Michael Buble

Regardless of what song you choose or what genre of music, make sure that your song resonates with the two of you. It's a special moment and there is nothing like making your first dance as a couple a meaning and spectacular time for the two of you.

Fondant - To Eat or Not To Eat - That is the Question

An interesting debate was had as my guests were enjoying the truly scrumptious cake that Christine Dahl created for my wedding day (pictured). By the way, it was a white cake with passion fruit, coconut and butter cream filling. The question was, "do you eat the fondant icing that surrounds the cake or not?"

A little background on fondant according to Wikipedia. "Fondant is a cream confection used as a filling or coating for cakes, pastries, and candies or sweets. In its simplest form, it is sugar and water cooked to a point, specifically the soft-ball stage, cooled slightly, and stirred or beaten until it is an opaque mass of creamy consistency. Fondant is commonly used to decorate wedding cakes. This gives the cakes a smooth appearance." Additionally, most bakers will lavish the cake with butter cream icing before laying the fondant over the cake, so that the fondant can stick to the cake.

For me, I love the taste of fondant, that chewy sugary taste that I just love, you do have to eat it sparingly - in no ways would I buy a tub full and eat it, but I do love the taste with my cake. Others on the other hand peel it off, stating that fondant is just for looks and to keep the cake moist, but it's not to be eaten
. In the past, fondant was removed before serving the cake, but cake bakers have come a long way and fondant, to me at least, is very tasty.

Therefore, to my readers I pose this question, "Do you eat your fondant?"

At any rate, I think fondant looks beautiful on cakes and regardless if you are an eater or a peeler, fondant will remain a staple to well crafted and elegant wedding cakes, ultimately it's not about the fondant, but the taste of the actual cake encased inside this sugary confection.

Back and Legally Married!

Well you have been probably wondering why I haven't blogged since last Friday. Well I have been in the midst of planning my wedding, as well as clients, who are getting married on June 21st. I had guests arrive on Sunday and have been entertaining as well.

As of June 17, 2008 at 10:00am (well a few minutes after), my partner, Ross, and I were legally married in the State of California, well actually we got our license around 8am, but the Mayor of Santa Barbara, Marty Blum, officially signed the document and sealed our legal marriage just after 10.

We were married in the Santa Barbara Courthouse Bell Tower that has amazing 360 degree views of the City of Santa Barbara. Along with about 30 friends and family and a slew of media, we said our vows to one another and made it official. There was so much emotion in the bell tower that it's hard to explain the feeling, except for extreme Joy.

We would like to thank Mama's Voices, a local gospel choir, for singing at our ceremony, they sang "Oh Happy Day" as we were pronounced husband and husband and released balloons from the bell tower. Thank you also to Christine Dahl for providing a beautiful wedding cake, our friends who hosted our wonderful and yummy luncheon reception at their home, and our family and friends for supporting our 16-year relationship and for being part of this historical day.

We had our commitment ceremony in 2005 and thought that this would just be a topper to that, but I have to tell you, it was just as fun and emotional. So as I continue to bask in marital bliss, I will end my blog for today on my own wedding.

Nature's Gift to Your Wedding

Your ceremony setting and decor is just as important as your reception location...if not more so. Most couples who have church weddings don't really have to worry about the back drop, but those who opt for outdoor ceremonies...you really need to scope out your ceremony site for that picture perfect setting.

Sure the ocean and valley views are spectacular. And open spaces can be made intimate with the right set-up and the addition of archways and chupas, but why not use the natural landscape of the location to be the centerpiece of your ceremony? Old established trees, hedges of bougainvillea, or floral gardens can be the much needed punch of panache to set-off your nuptials.

The natural elements of site can be adorned with flowers, crystals, lights and other elements to provide the perfect backdrop to your wedding or leave it in its natural state for a stunning green scene. Take it from me who set this wedding under oak trees to create a beautiful centerpiece and canopy to a couple's ceremony.

Couples, when looking for your ceremony locations, don't look at trees, hedges, or large stones as a deterrent. Rather, look at them as the perfect addition to your location and how they can be utilized to enhance the site. The best things about wedding locations are that they are as unique as you; no two are alike and they can be manipulated to best fit you as a couple. Foregoing the view and setting it towards a natural element, can be the much needed switch to set your dream day apart from all others.

Have fun looking for your locations and keep your mind open to all the possibilities. You never know when nature will speak to you.

Ben & Jerry's at Your Next Event

A funny thing happened as I was enjoying my Banana's on the Rum at my local Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop the other day. As I took a lick from my creamy confection - I noticed an in-store poster that said, "Let Ben & Jerry's Cater Your Next Event!" A smile formed on my face. My two favorite things - Events and Ben & Jerry's!

Well I have been doing ice cream sundae bars for events for the past few years...its something that I like to do rather than a buffet dessert bar, it's a lot more fun...and there are way more people that enjoy ice cream. However, the thought of a Ben & Jerry's ice cream bar is far more interesting than a no name brand, though I do love to use McConnell's in Santa Barbara as well.

At any rate, I contacted the manager of the store and here's the scoop. The cost is $3.00 - $3.50 per person depending on the number of guests. They bring up to five different Ben & Jerry's flavors of your choice, plus all the little accoutrements to embellish your own ice cream. Additionally, they bring all the cups, spoons, napkins and cones, so it's as if you are walking into your own mini Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop at your own event. There is also a $75 set up fee, which is minimal in the grand scheme of edible fabulousness. Now does that sound yummy or what!

This is perfect for any event, especially a child's birthday party or part of your lounge for your wedding or high-end event. Bring Vermont's Finest to your next shindig and I bet your guests will just think you are the coolest ever!

Check with your local Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop to see if they offer this service.

Ice Ice Baby!

We all know that the hottest trend is having a "lounge" at your wedding, but how cool would it be to do the entire lounge in ice!

Quebec City, Canada and Jukkasjärvi, Sweden have long been known for their Ice Hotels, where both cities take on a handful of artists to create and entire hotel resort out of ice. Both cities usually tie it in to their annual winter festival, but it's been so popular that they are leaving it open all winter long.

Now ice sculptors and other artists are bringing this craft to you and it can be done even in the middle of summer. So how fun would it be to create something so refreshing for your guests. Such companies as Ice Bulb in California can create these masterpieces for you. If you are not down with the entire ice lounge, you can opt to have one or two pieces made for your event, such as an ice bar or even an ice buffet table. This is so much better than those tired old martini luges and ice sculptures that has made its way to too many events.

So if you are looking for a way to cool your guests off during your event, this may be the solution you are looking for.

Tally Ho

Senorita Carolina Herrera has done it again. She has mixed the sensual with the modern in her Spring 2009 Wedding Collection. Her collection is spectacular.

For the 2009 season, she is taking the bride to the country, for some equestrian-esque silhouettes. It's almost Carrie Bradshaw meets Town and Country. I love the use of the hat and bustling of the gown (almost looks like a couture apron). The jacket is just so classic, reminds me of Celine Dion's Dior Backwards Jacket from a few years back ( I think she even wore a fedora) - but this is actually how it should be worn. This look reminds me of a Merchant Ivory Film, timeless beauty.

It seems that many designers for are playing up this look, such as Christian Dior and Monique Lhuillier. Another designer "riding" on the Equestrian Bridal look this season is Santa Barbaran Scott Corridan, Event Designer and Planner, who just launched his signature line of wedding gowns, White Chocolate Label, check out his Heather Gown, which is so chic and lovely. Maybe brides wearing these looks will consider a riding crop made of flowers to complete the ensemble?

Whether you are a "town" or "country" kind of gal, you will not go wrong with these sophisticated looks. To me these gowns signify a confident, well-heeled lady.

Cake Toppers - What's a Gay to Do?

Now that California will legally be recognizing and allowing same sex couples to marry, beginning on June 17, 2008, the flurry of last minute gay and lesbian nuptials are in the planning stages for the summer.

I'm talking about cake toppers today, because I got a call from the Santa Barbara News-Press regarding the increase of wedding business that maybe happening within the next few months, it's estimated that the gay wedding business will top over $370 million this coming year, according to some news sources. One of the questions that was asked by the reporter was...will I be using a two groom topper (as pictured) at a wedding I am planning for June 21st.

First let me say that I hate figurines of any type on a wedding cake...straight or gay. I think there is some "camp" value to it, but in reality I HATE THEM. But if you are a couple that is insistent on using them, consider using one made by Unique Cake Toppers, because theirs at least looks decent and not so plastic, circa 1950s, unless of course you are going with the 50s theme.

When asked this question, I cringed, because I would never use them or suggest them. It doesn’t reflect the bride and groom, groom and groom, or bride and bride. At any rate, I think the cake topper trend is becoming a little passé. Sure, the monograms are great, but in reality the cake itself should be the showstopper...it's traditionally the centerpiece of the reception.

Therefore, if you want my two cents...cake toppers should be an extension of the cake and the couple and should really be designed with the cake in mind. Sticking two figurines on top is just so simple and in reality, it looks so dreadfully dated. Additionally, these figurines tend to be eaten up by the size of some of the cakes that we are seeing lately. SO COUPLES - regardless of your sexual orientation...just say no to the figurines.

In addition, same-sex couples...let's try to limit the number of times we use the rainbow in our wedding decor - I love rainbows, but in reality, it's not that great of a color combination...so let's keep it to nature and to the rainbow flag.

Neither Straight Nor Narrow - Banquet Seating with a Twist

Tired of the same banquet set-ups at events? You know what I'm talking about...round, rectangle or square tables. Well now you have a new option...well actually it's been around a while but it's often used for the food stations. I'm talking about the often forgotten serpentine banquet table.

I've wanted to use these twisted tables at weddings and events...but have not had a client bold enough to try it out as banquet tables. Imagine curved lines mixed with modern chairs, such as the Philippe Starke Louis Ghost Chair or large upholstered leather poufs. Perfect for the couple who really does not want a linear look to their party.

Additionally, these tables can be twisted and arranged in many different configurations, which will make a statement at any event. Furthermore it's modern, adds that "oomph" to any setting, and you can be the party trendsetter amongst your friends.

Don't fret, these tables can be decorated and glammed up just like any of the traditional banquet tables. The pièce de résistance will be the tables themselves, adding to the overall decor of your banquet space, while wowing your guests with the unexpected seating arrangement. So take a walk on the wild side and put a new twist to your party.

Serpentine tables are available through most event rental companies, such as Classic Party Rentals and The Tent Merchant and usually available in two sizes, large or small serpentine (which refers to the curve of the tables).

Totes Galore

The classic tote is making a comeback and they are available in an array of price points, colors and styles. My favorites come from Lands End, Coach and Louis Vuitton. All three versions offer the classic look but they also have the now factor to them.

The Lands End Canvass Tip Proof Tote come in a variety of sizes and can be embroidered to your specifications. They range from $15.50 to $29.50 and come in 13 different combinations. They are made from batter-proof, 24-oz. cotton canvas with Reinforced, rip-resistant bottom and handles. The sturdier seams help tote stand upright and the medium, large and extra large sizes have four pockets inside to help you organize. The extra large sizes hold three regular bags of groceries. All sizes come with an antimicrobial finish. These totes are perfect for guest room amenities for your out-of-town guests or as favors for your destination wedding or event. Available through the Lands End Website.

The Coach Hamptons Canvass Draft Tote is an exquisite modern version of the classic tote. It comes in 4 color options including the Coach Signature canvass. It includes and inside zip pocket, PDA pocket, 3 pen loops, and two multifunction pockets. There is an outside open front pocket, outside open back pocket, zip-top closure, canvas with soft port leather trim, fabric lining; leather handles with 6” drop that can be worn on shoulder or cross body. It has a 54 1/2" adjustable strap with detachable pad and the tote measures 13 3/4 (L) x 15 (H) x 5 1/2 (W). The price of this Coach classic is $298 and well worth it. This tote would be a perfect gift for your attendants (groomsmen and bridesmaids) or as a thank you to your fabulous wedding planner. A great memento to your wedding. Available at Coach Stores nationwide or through their Website.

Finally...and I have been in love with this tote since I first saw it in NYC in the summer of 2005 is the Louis Vuitton Utah Leather Kiowa Tote. I can never justify the $2100.00 price tag but deep down - I know that this tote is well worth the self indulgence. The beautiful supple hand-grained Utah calf leather with fine top-stitching that has polished aged brass hardware, flat leather shoulder straps with adjustable buckles and zip-top closure; ends can be tucked inside bag for an alternate look. The tote has cotton canvas lining and interior flat pocket and phone pocket and measures 16.4"x 12.9"x 5.85".

Louis Vuitton or eLUXURY...maybe you can send me a sample of this since I am blogging about it. I promise to continue blogging about it too! At any rate the Louis Vuitton Utah Leather Kiowa Tote is available at Louis Vuitton stores internationally or through the eLUXURY Website. This would make a perfect gift for your bride or groom, or if you have money to burn, for the special few that helped to make your event memorable...like your planner.

Either way you go, cost effective or pure splurge, you and the people receiving these totes will not be disappointed. They are perfect remembrances of your special day and are a useful gift for those receiving them. So get on the "Tote Wagon" and get them while they are hot.

They're Back and Bigger than Ever

If you haven't seen the Sex and the City movie, yet...what are you waiting for? It was so nice to see our favorite BFF's in all their couture glory. Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte did not disappoint and the movie actually went beyond my expectations! I did not know how they would translate my girls from the small screen to the big screen, but boy did they.

There was so much eye candy in the movie that it was a little overwhelming, because my mind was going on overdrive from ideas. The wedding sequence where Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha, wore different bridesmaid dresses was so wonderful. I am so tired of going to weddings where every bridesmaid wears the same exact dress. Take it from the movie ladies...let your "maids" choose their style, but keep it in your color palette.

I loved all the colors in the movie, from the robin egg blue of Carrie's apartment, to the yellow of Samantha's suit, to the green of Carrie's floral dress and the pink of Stanford's tie. It was just vibrant and it was nice to see shocks of color mixed with the subtle. Every scene had color and that was truly unexpected. So if you are planning a party or event...don't be afraid to try bold colors.

The gowns that Carrie tried on for the Vogue photo shoot were spectacular. The Vera Wang gown was very reminiscent of the grey Dior gown she wore in Paris for the TV shows finale. Additionally, Christian Dior, Lavin, Christian LaCroix, Carolina Herrera and Vivienne Westwood, all delivered some spectacular styles, styling, and silhouettes for the movie. I can't wait for brides to hit the aisles in these outfits...if not just the knock-off versions of them.

So if you are looking for an excuse to see the movie...say you are doing research for your event. There are so many ideas that you can take away from it. I can't wait to see it again!
